Civil War Battles

During the late 1800's we all know that the Civil War took place. What most people don't know about the Civil War is all the different battles that took place during it. There were numerous battles such as Fort Sumpter, 1st Bull Run, Fort Henry, Fredricksburg, Gettysburg, and Sherman's March, just to name a few. Out of all 14 battles, there were 4 to me that stood out above the rest. There were Fort Sumpter, Fredricksburg, Gettysburg, and Appomattox.

Fort Sumpter was one of the battles that stood out because it was the first battle in the Civil War. On April 12, 1861 the Union states and Confederate states meet at Fort Sumpter where the first battle took place. It was recorded that there were no casualties during the battle of Fort Sumpter. There was only one death at Sumpter and that was the death of a horse, which is not considered an actually casualty. My overall inference about the first battle was that it was short, quick and important since it was the first battle.

Another battle that stood out was Fredricksburg. The importance of this battle was that it was a turning point for the Confederates. Before Fredricksburg, the Union was in strong control of the war. During this particular battle, General Lee of the Confederates, developed a plan which went on to helping the Confederates win the battle. 6x Union fighters were thrown back during this battle due to Lee's plan.

Of all the battles, Gettysburg was the one with the most deaths. This helped make the battle of Gettysburg so important in the War. The Union ended up winning the battle because the Union put a strong defence against the Confederates. Even though the Union put up a strong defense, they lost the most amount of people during this battle. There were so many casualties that at the end of the war, people just dug up huge holes and started dumping bodies in them. Till this day, if you go to Gettysburg you will see hills but what you are really looking at are dead people with dirt and grass thrown over them.

The last important battle was Appomattox. If you didn't know by now, Appomattox was the last battle of the Civil War. The battle ended by the South finally surrendering to the North. The war lasted from 1861 to 1865. There was a death total of 365,000 for the North and 260,000 deaths for the South at the end of the Civil War.

great blog! i really like how you used the important battles to briefly describe the civil war. your blog helped me learn a lot about the civil war. i didn't know that only a horse died at the battle of fort sumpter. my favorite part about your blog is when you described the dead bodies being buried under grass and dirt at gettysburg.

I liked your blog...especially the part when you described the battle of Gettysburg. I didn't know that the soldiers would bury the dead and cover them with grasses and soil. I didn't even know that there was only one casualty in the battle of Fort Sumpter and it was just a horse. Your blog was a very interesting one! Nice, too!

You had avery nice summary of the major battles of the war. But you forgot one major thing. You didn't connect the battle to now. How are these battles different form the ones now? Besides the obvious of course. Try that next time, and see where it takes you.

You did a good job on this blog. I liked how you listed all the battles that went down, and described about how people were burried. Bringing up the major turning points and the first and last battles were also good topics to mention. I would have connected the battles to todays styles and tactics.

Yes, well I thoroughly enjoyed the intense blog! Quite intriguing. But, it was like a really long lecture!

Was mostly interested in Appomattox...when the years of wars, pain, hate, guilt, etc. are all over. The statistics beat us all down whilst we build upon their ruins.

This is a great overall outline of the major battles of the Civil Wars. Like you said, there were many battles that had taken place, but only a few were critical. It is kind of unbelievable that the very first battle would have no casualties; how they did that is something else. I also think it’s interesting that the Confederate had to wait another battle after Gettysburg to surrender. They really didn’t want to give up.

Your blog was very interesting and well written.I learned a lot of new things. A brief summary of all those 4 main wars, were amazing. It is crazy, how the soldiers of Gettysburg would just bury the dead, under the grass and soil. When, I look at the hills, I can't believe im actually looking at dead bodies. That is kind of creepy. Great job!

This was a good overview of the battles. You made some inferences based on the facts, and I would like to see more of these. What do you think about these battles and how they affected the war? I would agree with Ellen and Jaime that it would have been interesting to compare this type of warfare to modern warfare.

Your blog it was a good general outlook on the war and its important points. It was interesting to learn that the horse was the only death in the battle at Fort Sumpter. Your blog didn't keep me interested though, it felt like i was reading a boring encyclopedia or something. Next time try to be less like a wikipedia page on the civil wars, if that makes sense.

This was a good blog. I liked how you broke down each battle individually and emphasized the importance of each battle. My favorite part of your blog was when you noted that a horse was the only casualty at the battle of fort sumpter.

Nice blog and you were right. Fort Stumpter was the first battle of the Civil War and the Gettysburg was in fact the bloodest battle of the civil war. The part I didn't know about was the soldiers burying the dead and covered them with grasses and soil. I can't imagine walking on all of the dead bodies.

I liked the way you stated the civil war was made up by many battles. This was helpful for me, because I did not know that there were 14 battles in the civil war. I glad how you pointed out the most important battles of the war; the battle of Appomattox, Fredricksburg, Fort Sumpter, and Gettsyburg. I am also glad you pointed out the reasons, or why the 4 battles were important. And this is truly a well developed essay, keep up the good work.

hey! I think that your blog pointed out a lot of things that i never looked at before. Like I never really knew that there was 14 battles fought in the Civil War. Also i never stoped to think about how diffrent battles really stood out. I liked how you pointed that out. I agree that Fort Sumpter, Fredricksburg, Gettysburg, and Appomattox were the most important.

This blog gave me a very good, short, review of the battles. I payed attention in class but ya know with so much going on things are forgotten. I didn't know that the hills in Gettysburg was where they buried them. But I don't think the remains would still be there because its been so long and I would think scientists would want to dig them up and study them and such or some crazy person decided to dig them up...who knows?
